Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH)

Risk Factors

Risk Factors - General:

BPH occurs because of male hormones and is strongly associated with increasing age.

Risk Factors for Progression:

These include prostate size (>40g), age (over 70 years), FR (<10m/second), worsening symptom scores, increasing PMR (>150ml) and PSA (>1.4ng/ml).

However it is worth noting that research has shown that in patients who are managed expectantly and reviewed after five years, about 20% will have improved symptoms, 30% worse symptoms and about 50% will be the same.
